When it comes to figuring out exactly what to discard, I generally recommend an easy-to-follow criteria: The easiest things to discard will be those that (1) you donât use, and (2) you have no emotional connection to. These criteria should take care of most of your junk.
Now, some items may fit one of these, but not both. Thereâs also that little voice in the back of your head that wonders if there may ever be a time in the distant future when you might need them. If youâre uncertain of whether or not to get rid of an item, I would advise simply placing it in a third pile and labeling it âunsure.â You can deal with it later; just donât sit there for two hours contemplating whether or not to keep it. As a general rule, if you canât remember the last time you used an item, get rid of it. This is just your anxious mind trying to control future scenarios, which may never come. Some items might be completely useless to you, but you might have memories attached to them; or you might appreciate an item for other reasons, like the beauty it adds to your life. Keep in mind to simply weigh the significance or value, or the beauty an item adds to your life, with the cost.
